The "Arbequina" variety of olive is named after the municipal district of Arbequa where it was first cultivated. According to tradition it originates from Mallorca where, after conquering the island from the Moors who held the olive in great esteem, King James I took it to Cataluna.
It was one of his feudal subjects, Mr Arbeca, who planted the olive for its undeniable advantages. These being the excellent quality of oil produced and its early yield together with the promise of a monetary compensation for each one.
Subsequently, the Governor of Lerida, Count De Bessacout, promoted the opening of wasteland to cultivate this type of olives.
